Lygnstøylvatnet as a cultural monument
Lygnstøylvatnet is a special cultural monument. Being able to see the ruins under
the water is something unique. A parallel can be drawn from southern Europe,
where the Italian towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were covered by lava and ash
after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Respect our cultural monuments!
Lygnstøylvatnet is a precious cultural monument. The old road, its kerb stones,
bridges, farms, stone walls and trees are extremely fragile. Please respect the cultur­
al monuments in the area to avoid unnecessary damage or wear.
Rules for diving:
• Divers in Lygnstøylvatnet must exercise great care.
• Diving is only permi ed on the western side of the old road in Lygnstøylvatnet
• Do not touch the trees in the water
• Do not move stones or timber constructions
• Do not dig in the bo om sediment, in the houses or elsewhere.
These guidelines have been compiled in consultation with the antiquities authorities
and landowners.
The use of underwater scooters is forbidden, according to
Section 40 of the Act on Small Boats.
