Norangsdalen
– The wildest and most beautiful valley of Sunnmøre
The landscape
Norangsdalen stretches from Øye at the end of Norangsfjorden in the municipality
of Ørsta, through Nibbedalen towards Tryggestad and to Hellesylt in the municipality
of Stranda. The highest point in the valley is around 300 metres above sea level.
The surrounding mountains tower up to 1700 metres. The best known are Slogen
(1564 metres), Smørskredtinden (1631 metres) and Kvitegga (1693 metres).
The valley was formed by glaciers during the last Ice Age and rockfalls and avalanches
have contributed to its dramatic shape. Avalanches are very common in the winter,
and traces of them can be seen well into the summer. The road is therefore often
closed in the winter.
