Norangsdalen
– The wildest and most beautiful valley of Sunnmøre
Hill farming
Norangsdalen has been used for summer grazing and hill farming for hundreds of
years. At Stavbergsetra and Urasetra, houses were built in the shelter of the rocks
and a rock wall to provide maximum protection from avalanches and the wind. The
herder’s buildings were built in the mid-1800s, when hill farming was most intensive in
this country.
After the 1920s, hill farming in Norangsdalen began to decline and by the 1950s, had
died out almost completely. Cattle, sheep and goats now graze in the valley.
