Norangsdalen
 – The wildest and most beautiful valley of Sunnmøre
Getting about
Norangsdalen is the link between the inner part of Sunnmøre and Nordfjord, and there
has been a road running through the valley since ancient times. The current road was
built between 1893-1898. An older cart track dating from 1846 can still be seen many
places. The road is now classed as county road 655.
Improvement of the road in the 1890s began in line with the increase in tourism, and
the desire to make the journey through the valley more comfortable for the many
tourists. Only a few years after the road was completed, the ‘Storesvora’ landslide and
rockfall occurred, and left large parts of the new road under water. This is the road that
now lies on the bottom of Lygnstøylvatnet.
The road is very important to tourism in Sunnmøre. A trip through the valley is a real
tourist attraction.
There are several bridges long the road built in the late 1800s: Nebbedølbrua, stone
bridges at Haugen and Litlevatnet, Geilskredbrua, Lysholbrua and Skylstadbrua.
Svidebrua was also built in the 1830s.
Geilskredbrua was restored in 2011 by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration
after it was damaged by a rockfall. The Administration is responsible for their own
cultural monuments.
Svidebrua is a stone bridge with six spans. The bridge has been damaged by the river
several times, and restored by local farmers. It is still used today by farmers.
