Norangsdalen
– The wildest and most beautiful valley of Sunnmøre
How Lygnstøylvatnet came to be
The road through Lygnstøylvatnet was blocked on 26 May 1908 by a massive
landslide from Keipen. The villagers said they could hear this was much bigger
than anything before. The noise was tremendous, and large parts of the valley
were coated with dust. The landslide was the worst ever in Hjørundfjorden.
It became known as ‘Storesvora’, and filled up the valley floor with stone. The villagers
were met by an enormous stone wall. By sheer luck no one was hurt.
Storesvora blocked the river Lygna, which ran through the valley. As the days went by,
the river water began to rise forming Lygnstøylvatnet.
The rockfall brought one gigantic stone which was left standing upright. This 12
metrehigh stone became known as “GangeRolv”. Youngsters carved the name
and the date of Storesvora into the stone, as a reminder of the landslide. The stone
stands on the west of the road, just north of Lygnstøylvatnet.
